Henry Chandler Bowen (1813-1896) was an American editor, publisher, and philanthropist. He is best known for his association with the influential magazine "The Independent," which he co-founded and edited. Bowen was born in Woodstock, Connecticut, and he came from a family of prominent Congregational ministers.

In 1848, Henry C. Bowen and his brother-in-law, Francis D. Moulton, co-founded "The Independent," a weekly newspaper that focused on Congregationalist views and promoted evangelical Protestantism. The publication became known for its social and religious commentary and was influential in shaping public opinion during the mid-19th century. It was particularly influential in promoting antislavery and temperance movements.
