Working along with his older brother, William, co-founder of the American Express Co., James became a prominent figure in the railroad and express industries. He became president of American Express in 1881 upon his brother's retirement from that position. 11¾ x 8 ½ s tock certificate for 21 shares in the American Express Company was signed as president Henry Wells and James C. Fargo as secretary, 1866, New York. Some light damp staining at lower left corner. Uncancelled and very fine.
