JOHN SULLIVAN (1740-1795). An American Revolution general, Sullivan fought at the siege of Boston in 1775 and 1776, as well as Long Island, Trenton, Princeton and Brandywine. In 1778, he headed the forces that sieged Newport. After the war, he served in the Continental Congress, New Hampshire's attorney general and President, and a Federal judge.

ALS. lpg. 7 ¼" x 7 ½". 23d Day of April 1778. State of Rhode Island. A scarce war-dated autograph letter signed "Jno Sullivan". The Major General wrote "To Colo Steele Paymaster General of the Army in the State of Rhode Island": "Sir pay to my aid de camp Major Lewis Morris on my account jive hundred Dollars for which this Shall be your sufficient warrant given at Head quarters in Providence the 23d day of April 1778 Jno Sullivan M General & Commander In Chief of the American Forces R: Island". At the bottom is an autograph note signed "Lewis Morris A.D.C. ": "Providence 23d April 1778 Recd of Benj. Steele Ast. Pay Mast Gen/ the sum of jive hundred Dollars agreeable to the above Warrants". Lewis Morris was Sullivan's aide-de-camp and the son of the Declaration of Independence Signer of the same name. This letter is in very fine condition overall with dark ink. It is pictured in Charles Hamilton's book American Autographs on page 246. Autograph Letters Signed by Sullivan remain very scarce.
