Abraham Davenport (1715-1789) was an American politician and public servant known for his distinguished career during the colonial era. Born in Stamford, Connecticut, he became a prominent figure in the state's government, serving as a legislator, judge, and town clerk. He served in the Connecticut state militia as a colonel. DS. 1 page. 6 ½” x 5”. June 14, 1782. Partly-printed order to pay Davenport “one pound out of the Tax of Two Shillings and Six Pence on the Pound….” Boldly endorsed on verso by Davenport. Countersigned on the front by Oliver Wolcott, Jr. (1760-1833). Wolcott, the son of the Declaration Signer, was the Secretary of the Treasury under Washington and Adams and a Connecticut governor. Oliver served the Treasury Department faithfully under Hamilton and was instrumental in establishment branches of the Bank of the United States. A nice association of the two signing a single document. Folds. Fine.
