James Seddon (1815 - 1880). American politician from Virginia. After serving two non-consecutive terms in the United States House of Representatives, Seddon was appointed Confederate Secretary of War by Jefferson Davis during the American Civil War. He retired from the position and public service in general on January 1, 1865. DS. 1 page. 8 1/4" x 10 1/2". Dec. 1st, 1862. Appointment of Capt. D. M. Cooper of the 68th N.C. Regt. to "Assistant Commissary 68th North Carolina Regiment in the Provisional Army in the service of the Confederate States..." Boldly signed by Seddon while serving as Confederate States Secretary of War.
