Richard Varick was an American politician who served as the New York State Attorney General. He served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution and served as a personal aid to George Washington towards the end of the war. This letter, dated October 21, 1793, was written and signed by Varick.

Be it remembered that on this twenty-first day of October in the year of lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety three, before me Richard Varck Mayor of the city of New York, _________ appeared Anthony Clawson of the first ward of this same city Cartman and ____ Salmon of this same ____ Cartman and acknowledged themselves to be indebted to the people of the state of New York, that is to say, the said Anthony Clawson in the sum of one hundred pounds current money of the same state and be said Isaac Salmon in the sum of fifty pounds like money to be made and levied of then general _____ good and _____, lands and ____ it to the use of the people of the same state of default shall be made in the condition following:
