[CIVIL WAR LETTER] Unsigned Soldiers Letter, July 27, 1863. 4 pp. 5 x 8". In ink to his wife Mrs. Minerva Kitson. With original stamped envelope with Bulls Eye cancellation from Norfolk, Va. The soldier writes a touching letter with much misspelling. He compares the courage of the volunteers with the drafted cowards:

"... Our sergeant starts this afternoon for 200 conscripts to fill the regiment he goes to...git them. Ithink when they come we will give them an introduction to the soft side of a bourd to sleep on in stead ofa feather bed. I cannot bear the thought of being drafted and being forced from hour homes and being draged from the sight of our wives by the draft I Well my Dear I suppose that the drafted cowards in Lodi think that our assignement has not done anything. They come and try it for six months/or evey day they will cey it different story...we have showe our couraged by volunteering ourselves freely ...! hear the sol/om beat of the drum. What does it mean I will tell you another of the soldiers is ded              "

Heartfelt and moving letter in Very Good+ condition.
