Anderson MD-7. Maryland. August 5, 1793. Exchange certificate issued to “John Robertson or bearer, to receive the sum of Fifty Pounds specie, at the rate of seven shillings and six-pence for a Spanish milled dollar... “to adjust the debts due from this state”. The interest rate portion of the note has been crossed out indicating the state owed no interest on this direct obligation. The act which authorized this issue was passed as a measure to stabilize the states difficult wartime finances. A portion of the upper left is missing and as such there is loss of some border printing on the very scarce note. Otherwise, very fine.
