George Peabody Wetmore (1846 – 1921. Governor and Senator from Rhode Island. The son of wealthy trader William Shepard Wetmore, who built the Chateau Sur Mer, one of Newport, Rhode Island’s Gilded Age Mansons, George inherited the property upon his father’s death. He served as governor of Rhode Island (1885 – 1887) and as a senator from that state from 1895 – 1907.
