1871, Minnesota. 9 ½ x 6 ½ stock certificate for 40 shares. Black with attached adhesive revenue stamp at right. Nice panoramic vignette of a steam locomotive crossing a bridge at center, smaller locomotive at lower left. Issued to and signed twice by SAMUEL M. FELTON (1809 - 1889) President of the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad. During the Civil War, Felton ensured that the line was able to run despite Confederate attacks. Felton also played a key part in foiling an attempt to assassinate President Lincoln by hiring Allan Pinkerton to infiltrate the Maryland Secessionists. Learning that the men planned to kill Lincoln during a stop in Baltimore, Felton and others devised a plan to provide secret transportation for Lincoln directly from Philadelphia to Washington. Also signed as president by Jay Cooke, Jr. (1845 - 1912) The eldest son of Jay Cooke. He served as a junior partner in his father's Washington and New York offices until the collapse of Jay Cooke and Company in September, 1873. In December of that year, he formed Charles D. Barney & Co. with his brother-in-law, Charles D. Barney and served as a minority partner in the firm, essentially reopening the doors of the failed former company. Their new company concentrated on trading securities. One very small punch cancellation at Cooke's signature, both of Felton's are unaffected. Very Fine. $350.00/210
