“Our company was advancing on the extreme left of the infantry on Apr. 9 when news came of Lee’s...surrender.”

A large muster roll detailing all of the members of the black regiment dated just three weeks following Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. The company of Captain J. W. Brockway was under the command of Colonel C. E. Royce “from the twenty-eighth day of February 1865, when last mustered, toe the thirtieth day of April 1865.’

Lengthy manuscript summary of the company’s actions detail movements from March 19th until after the Confederate surrender. “Our company was advancing on the extreme left of the infantry on Apr. 9 when news came of Lee’s ( ) to surrender.”

The 29th Regiment, United States Colored Troops (USCT), was a key African American regiment that served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Organized in Quincy, Illinois, in April 1864, it fought in several key battles and campaigns, including the Siege of Petersburg and the Appomattox Campaign. The regiment also served in Texas after the war. The 29th USCT is notable for its participation in the Battle of the Crater, where it suffered heavy casualties

A fine document offering a great deal of source information on the soldiers serving.
