DAVID HUNTER (1802 - 1886). Union general during the Civil War. His unauthorized order in 1862 emancipating slaves in three Southern states was immediately rescinded by President Lincoln. Hunter served as the president of the military commission which tried the Lincoln assassination conspirators.

1879, New York Stock certificate for 130 shares of $100 each. Brown\Black. Engraved vignette of a steam locomotive at top center, portrait vignette of Frederick Billings at bottom. Issued to Maria Hunter Stewart, David’s daughter who married General George A. Stewart. Maria signs on verso and Hunter witnesses with a bold signature “D. Hunter, U.S. Army”. Folds, Fine.
