EBENEZER DAYTON. Privateer, Merchant. Partly-printed document accomplished in Dayton's hand and boldly signed by him. March 30,1779. A receipt for interest payment on continental certificates on behalf od Mark Levinworth. A rare autograph of this daring privateer of the American Revolution.
Ebenezer Dayton is a significant factor in the history of Long Island. During the American Revolution, Dayton would lead raids on British ships and outposts after he and his family were chased from Long Island to Connecticut. He was incredibly successful in his attempts and was eventually well known by the British on Long Island. Because both patriots and loyalists distrusted him, he eventually faked his death by drowning in 1786. He is also known for his connection to Aaron Burr who served as Dayton’s lawyer.
