A scarce autograph letter signed by American poet, editor, and literary figure Charles Hanson Towne (1877–1949), written on official McClure’s Magazine editorial department stationery and dated October 27, 1911. Penned in ink to “Miss Oldham,” the brief but personable note apologizes for a delayed response and explains that Towne has been occupied with “Mrs. Taversham.” Though concise, the letter offers an appealing association with one of the most influential literary magazines of the early twentieth century. At the time, McClure’s Magazine stood at the forefront of American journalism and literature, publishing many of the era’s leading writers and muckraking journalists. Towne was a well-known poet, editor, and literary personality who contributed extensively to American magazines and newspapers and later became editor of Smart Set. His correspondence on McClure’s letterhead is notably uncommon and desirable for collectors of literary Americana and publishing history. Single page, written on printed editorial stationery of McClure’s Magazine, New York. Very good condition with light folds and minor toning.
