HERON, WILLIAM (1742-1819). A Revolutionary War double agent. His dealings did not come to light until a century after his death, when some papers were discovered. Connecticut Comptroller's office receipt for interest on state notes, signed William Heron. William Heron was a Revolutionary War double agent who's singular motivation was money. Although he held a seat in the Connecticut legislature, writings discovered a century after his death makes it evident that he was working for both America and Britain during the Revolutionary War. This piece, written from the Connecticut Comptroller of Public Accounts office, was a receipt for paid interest on states notes signed by Heron while serving in Connecticut political office. Partially Printed Document Signed, "Wm. Heron." One page, 7 1/4" x 3". Hartford. May 12, 1789. The document acknowledges receipt of thirteen shillings eight pence lawful money being the interest due on 1 state notes totaling £11.8.92. Excellent condition.
